Fagopyrum esculentum 'Takane Ruby' was selected by Akio Ujihara, a professor emeritus from Shinshu University in Japan. The seeds were originally collected from a unique flowering Fagopyrum esculentum in Yunnan, China.

It has been our experience that Fagopyrum esculentum 'Takane Ruby' grows well in our area in a warm season planting. It is an attractive plant that has grown well for us, has not had pest problems, and is low maintenance. However, it is prone to deer herbivory. We do not recommend direct sowing, but instead starting them in a pot and planting them once they are about three inches tall into the garden.
